In spite of our world’s deep resources and the endless opportunities it promises, some of our poorest and most vulnerable global neighbours are confronted by seemingly insurmountable problems. These problems are real, impactful to billions and in many cases, solvable.
Poverty still affects a large percentage of the globe’s population. Today, there are 1.7 billion people living in extreme poverty. At the current time, 22,000 children die each day due to extreme poverty. Please take a moment to reflect on the gravity of that. Now consider that one in nine people do not get enough food to sustain them in good health. The principal reason for hunger isn’t a lack of food production; it’s a lack of resources to buy the food.
The lack of water threatens the quality of life and the very existence of millions of lives. In developing countries, 1.1 billion people have inadequate access to water. Sixty six percent of these people survive on less than $2 a day, the remaining thirty four percent (that is, 363 million people) live on less than $1 a day.
In developing countries, 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation. This problem is the main reason why nearly 1.8 million children die, each year, as a result of diarrhea.
Today, 759 million adults are illiterate and have limited capacity to improve both their own living conditions and those of their families. Moreover, 72 million children, aged between 6-10 years old, are not in school.
These are some of the world’s problems that Future University wants to solve. We believe that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to the solution.
